Protagonist Selection

In psychodrama the protagonist is the principle actor who has chosen to work on a particular issue or theme from their life. Their particular goal is negotiated in the process of making a contract with the director.

Great care is taken by the director to ensure that the group supports the work of the chosen protagonist. Sometimes where this is not clearly the case the director will work with the whole group.

Choosing a protagonist is an art in itself. There are several ways of doing so. Sociometry (Visually seeing where the group choices are heading) is one method. Asking for democratic votes on who should work. Some directors simply choose on the basis of their own intuition or clinical judgement.
