AWARD FOR ‘HOLISTIC’ PRISON FILM PROJECT
Positive Images, a charity which produces health education films made by and for prisoners, has won an award from the Princes Foundation for Integrated Health (FIH) for its work with female offenders at Eastwood Park.

It was named runner-up in the Judges’ Special Award category at the 2008 Integrated Health Awards, held this May in London. The awards, which are sponsored by the Department of Health, celebrate ‘integrated health’ approaches. Broadly, this means considering lives in the round, rather than treating symptoms in isolation.

The project involves working with women to produce audio visual material, examining different aspects of healthy living – such as going to the gym, eating, relaxation, mental health issues and self-harm. The finished films are distributed within the prison via the psychology, counselling and mental health education units.

Martin Gill, development officer for Positive Images, said: “The award is generic for our various projects in Eastwood Park. Considering we were a small, new project, competing with some large established organizations, we think that this is fantastic news.”

Martin added: “Some of our work looked at the effects of self-harming prisoners on the well being of other prisoners who were close friends. We have also involved prisoners on ACCTs within the projects, and our latest work is measuring any positive attitude changes for those on ACCTs who take part.”
Positive Images has also joined Eastwood Park’s ‘healthy prisons’ management team.
